Perito Merino

I am in El Calafaté at the moment. Today I went to see the Perito Merino Glacier. The hype is big for this glacier and bus load after bus load of tourists make their way everyday to see it.

Is it really worth it? Does it live up to expectations?

It is big. Really big. Some 5kms across and 50 to 55m high, 13 odd km long fed by the Patagonian Ice Field I was writing about earlier. What is special about this glacier is the spectacular ice falls as the edge of the glacier is continuously calving.

To hear the ice cracking and to see big chunks of ice falling into the water creating big waves and a thunderous noise was a great experience. I was there for a few hours waiting for a really big piece to break off - you need to be patient, or lucky...

Can you see the ice boat with the two figures (and maybe a dog) taking a closer look at the face of the glacier???
